This is the first picture of a man accused of killing an eight-year-old boy by pushing him onto railway tracks.

Habte Araya, 40, originally from Eritrea but living in Switzerland, has been arrested for pushing a boy and his mother under a train at Frankfurt’s main station.

The high-speed ICE train – travelling across  Germany from Dusseldorf to Munich – ran over the boy as it pulled into the station just before 10am local time on Monday.

Commuters “collapsed” screaming and crying on the platform, one witness said.

Witnesses described how Araya, a married father-of-three children aged one, three and four, pushed the boy and his mother deliberately onto the train tracks before running away and also trying to push a third person onto the tracks.

Araya faces one charge of murder as well as two charges of attempted murder.

Police have said the motive is unclear.

The force said there appears to be no connection between the victims and the suspect.

Police spokeswoman Isabell Neumann said: “According to witness reports, a 40-year-old man pushed the boy and his mother onto the track just as the ICE (train) was arriving.
