Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, passed away in Detroit on Thursday, August 16.
The 76-year-old critically-acclaimed singer had been battling cancer for eight years and passed away in her home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Aretha’s representative Gwendolyn Quinn said her cause of death was advanced pancreatic cancer .
Tributes for the diva flooded in from news outlets, celebrities and fans alike.
But not everyone got their tributes right.
Fox News has come under fire from fans of Aretha for using a photo of the wrong person in their memorial montage to the singer.
Instead of a picture of Aretha, the company accidentally included an image of 74-year-old singer/songwriter Patti LaBelle.
People were outraged by the mistake, with many taking to social media to vent about it.
One person wrote: “The dis-R-E-S-P-E-C-T. That’s really Patti LaBelle in the corner wtf.”
Another said: “Pretty soon they will feature a video of Whitney Houston with the caption, Aretha sings ‘I will Always Love You.”
A third added: “How the hell do you mix up Patti Labelle with Aretha Franklin. Yes they are both amazing black vocal powerhouses. But damn Fox News don’t y’all got one black person on staff to ok this.”
Following the backlash, Fox News have issued an apology for their gaffe.
Fox News Media Desk Vice President, Jessica Santostefano, told People : “We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin’s family and friends.
“Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret.”
The image of Patti featured in the tribute was from a performance at the White House in 2014.
Aretha Franklin attended the event that night, but she is not visible in the photo and it is unclear whether the late singer did in fact perform alongside Patti LaBelle.
Patti shared her grief over the death of Aretha on Twitter on Thursday.
She posted: “I am deeply saddened about the passing of the Queen of Soul and my sister in song, Aretha Franklin.
“Today the world has experienced a tremendous loss. Aretha was a rare treasure whose unmatched musical genius helped craft the soundtrack to the lives of so many.
“My sympathy, love and prayers go out to her family, loved ones and fans across the globe.”
