A woman has died attempting to deliver her own baby while watching a “how-to” video on Youtube.
The Indian woman may have attempted to deliver her own baby as she feared the social stigma of becoming a mother as an unmarried woman, according to local reports.
The unnamed woman and her newborn baby boy were found dead at the scene of her home which she had rented just days earlier in Gorakhpur, a city in the northeast Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Police told the Hindustan Times the death was discovered when the woman’s neighbours informed her landlord they had seen blood flowing out of her room on Monday morning (local time).
Her landlord broke down the door and found scissors, a blade and thread near the bodies, along with a smart phone, according to the report.
It “revealed that she was watching ‘how to deliver baby by self’ and other similar safe delivery processes on YouTube,” cantonment police station house officer Ravi Rai said.
He added police believed she had attempted to self-deliver on Sunday night, four days after renting the flat.
He told the Times the woman was from Bahraich, and police believed the reason she had sought to deliver the baby alone was “fear of social stigma attached to being an unmarried mother.”
Unmarried women in India can still face discrimination and social shame over their position.
The woman’s landlord told the newspaper that the heavily pregnant woman had approached him last week wanting to rent the room.
He said her mother would be arriving soon to attend the labour in hospital.
Mr Rai added the woman’s family had been informed about the incident and the body had been handed back to them following a post-mortem.
He said they had declined to file a police report against anyone over the incident.
