One of America’s most prolific serial killers failed to meet the eye of a would-be victim during his execution.

Bobby Joe Long was put to death on Thursday night as Lisa McVey — his last victim who managed to escape — watched on from the front row of the public gallery.

The 56-year-old didn’t utter a word nor open eyes after been taken in the execution chamber at Florida State Prison.

The killer released McVey after he’d already murdered ten women in a spree that began March 1984 and ended with his arrest eight months later.

She then helped capture the beast and bring him to justice 34 years ago.

At his execution, she said she tried to position herself where he would see her.

McVey said: “I wanted to look him in the eye. I wanted to be the first person he saw. Unfortunately, he didn’t open his eyes.”

She said that she started to cry after watching the execution, adding: “The peace that came over me is a remarkable feeling.”

Long terrified the Tampa Bay area for eight months in 1984 as women began showing up dead, their bodies often left in gruesome positions.

Most of the victims were strangled. Some had their throats slit. Others were bludgeoned to death.

Another victim, who was 22 when she was murdered, was Michelle Denise Simms

Police had few clues until McVey’s abduction. Then 17, she was kidnapped by Long outside a church after riding her bike home from her job at a Krispy Kreme doughnut store.

He held her in his apartment and repeatedly raped her for 26 hours.

McVey made up a story she was the sole caregiver to an ailing parent to try to evoke sympathy from Long, which eventually led him to letting her go.

Her description of the incident led police to Long.

McVey, now Lisa Noland, went on to become a police officer.

Long, whose final meal was roast beef, bacon, french fries and soda , confessed to the crimes, receiving 28 life sentences and one death sentence for the murder of 22-year-old Michelle Simms.

Authorities said he had also admitted to raping about 40 women.

The scheduled 6pm execution had been delayed temporarily while the US Supreme Court considered his final appeals which they rejected.

“The ones that matter,” it said above their faces.
